APPRECIATING DIFFERENCE - Creating harmonious workplace relationships
A unique opportunity to move your colleagues to a new level in their diversity awareness.
Why is this workshop important?
We have had equality initiatives to help us to stop discriminating against particular groups for the last twenty years. Now we are using the word 'diversity' and talking about all kinds of differences. But diversity is still seen by many employees to
be someone else's responsibility - Human Resources, or Recruitment or Leaders. It is time to help individuals see diversity in a new way. Domino's approach focuses on the concept of difference which includes all differences, and we look at every individual's responsibility in relation to Diversity. It is an inclusive approach as opposed to an exclusive one.
We need to enable individuals to take responsibility for how they themselves are. What we are inclined to do is focus on
trying to get the other person to change so that we will be more comfortable.
Much current training is about adopting a code of behaviour towards others - not about increasing their awareness of their own value system, how they acquired it and how they project it. The new half day workshop we offer is helping individuals to look at how they see the world and whether their lenses, as it were, need changing. It assumes that the start point for
change is within themselves. So we don't try to get them to change their attitudes, but we do challenge them to move out of their comfort zones. We all need to understand that if we are uncomfortable with someone it is probably more to do with ourselves than it is to do with the person we are uncomfortable with. The key learning messages are that: everyone has a right to their own personal value system, and that we do not have a right to impose our value system on others so
that we treat them badly, resulting in their performance being less effective at work.
What are the workshop objectives?
At the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:
- assess their own cultural programming
- identify their own biases, prejudices and assumptions
- identify the connection between bias and behaviour and the performance of others
- draw up an individual action plan to address any changes needed
Who should attend?
Diversity is not only for leaders - for managers - for 'the organisation' - it concerns everyone in your business. It is about individual responses to every other individual we have contact with. It will be of benefit to people who:
- would like to understand themselves and others better
-
want to increase their knowledge about diversity and how it impacts working relationships
- have fixed ideas about other people and are prepared to have them challenged
- have an open mind and enjoy learning in a challenging, caring, fun environment
What is the workshop format?
Throughout the day key concepts and ideas will be presented and delegates will have the opportunity to work individually,
in pairs and in small groups. Exercises include using videos and photographs. At each stage there will be time for an open forum with the presenters, to review any issues arising from your discussions. It will be up to each delegate to decide how much or how little information they wish to share with their syndicate partners.
How many delegates per workshop?
For this workshop we have designed exercises which work best with 20 delegates - and if you wish you can run two half-day workshops in one day. This means you can train 40 people per day and makes it extremely cost effective for you.
Does it work?
Yes. Organisations who are using, or have used this workshop include DuPont Europe; FMC Europe; Leeds Metropolitan
University; The Boots Group; Charles Schwab Europe; LLoydsTSB, Safewayand PepsiCo International. In addition this workshop has been commissioned by many NHS Trusts and Hospitals, Universities and Government Departments. All these organisations are seeking to go further than 'equality' has taken them.
The feedback we are getting from people like you is that something different is needed in diversity training. The feedback
